Art gallery exhibit features look at human faces

Artist Nancy Moyer will explore the theory that all faces have three sides in her new art exhibit at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The exhibit, The Bicameral Face, begins Friday, Jan. 27, and continues through Wednesday, Feb. 22. An artist reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, with Moyer speaking at 6:30 p.m.

“We are all aware of the asymmetry of the human face, but what causes it?” Moyer said. “I decided to explore a theory of brain function as it affects our face and discovered a fascinating approach to the portrait.

“With my Faces, I have created a series of portraits that I believe more accurately depict each individual than would the traditional single-image portrait. The visual effect of this complex mind structure is demonstrated through a variety of individuals who make many decisions on a daily basis,” she said.

Moyer said The Bicameral Face shows the three true personas that existed at the time of the photograph including the Empirical merged face, or the person we see; the Commander, or the dominant side who receives and generates information and has cosmic connections; and the Facilitator, or the side that analyzes information and manifests it into a visible or public act.

“I discovered that the face is a dynamic organ. Depending on the person’s daily experience, the asymmetry may change,” she said. “I re-photographed several of the faces and they were different each time. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.

“With this exhibit, I identify some dual personalities, some inner conflicts and show the window of the brain through the facial windows of my subjects. I hope viewers will think about their own faces from this point of view and consider using this concept as a way towards a better understanding of themselves and those around them.”

Moyer is Professor Emerita of Art at University of Texas-Pan American. She was chair of the art department there for 17 years. She is currently chair of the McAllen Arts Council, art critic for the McAllen Monitor and has served as managing editor of Voices of Art magazine.
She has had 10 solo exhibitions and over 90 juried and group shows with mostly drawing and metal work.

Her most recent exhibits include Jackrabbits! a collaborative public sculpture commission by the city of McAllen; Chain Show, at the Blue Heron Gallery in Deer Isle, Maine; and the Fifth Anniversary Exhibit at Galeria 409 in Brownsville.

Artist’s Statement

According to Leopold Ballak, M.D., the face is the window of the brain. “The left side of the face, controlled by the right side of the brain, expresses feelings and passions more intensely than the right side. As a result the left side tends to record a deeper, perhaps more revealing pattern of emotions than the more easily controlled right side of the face.” (reverse for left handers).

It turns out that this describes the actions of Julian Jaynes theory, “The Bicameral Mind.” My interest is directed further toward the visual and physical effect the brain exerts on the face, and why. According to Julian Jaynes, the bicameral mind, which was an evolution of our early brain, identified a Master Control (right side). This side commanded; the other obeyed. The right side was able to tap into a variety of knowledge sources: its own active synapses, bioelectrical resources from within and without, the cosmic consciousness, etc. As logic (left side) evolved and offered a better way of social interacting, the bicameral master control mind with its vast bioelectrical resources de-evolved. It ultimately was seen as disruptive and primitive. We are left with two distinct brain hemispheres that don’t work together as well as they once did. The vestiges of its process has been seen as a gift, since, unlike the logical mind, the right side could often foretell the future, and warn of unseen dangers. Evolved down into the “intuitive” brain, it is our sixth sense. Although it has declined from a probable audible voice to a “hunch” or a “gut feeling,” it is still often identified as “the voice within.” Bucky Fuller identified the bicameral mind structure inadvertently with his Phantom Captain: the little person inside operating the controls.

• The Empirical merged face: the person we see;

• The Commander: the dominant side who receives and generates information and

has cosmic connections;

• The Facilitator: who analyses information and manifests it into a visible, or public, act.

Or doesn’t, which forms an interesting conflicted face.

Six seniors who will receive their degrees from Texas A&M University-Kingsville this month have their art on display at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery from Wednesday, Dec. 7, through Friday, Dec. 16. A reception will be held in their honor Dec. 7.

4th Annual Kingsville Art Walk Steam Roller Prints

Kingsville Inksville features a variety of prints made in unique way

Currently on display in the Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville are a number of prints made in an unusual way. No normal press was used to make these prints although they were pressed, literally. During the recent Artwalk in downtown Kingsville, prints made on large wooden blocks were pressed on paper using a steam roller normally reserved for construction or road work.

These prints are now on display at the gallery through Friday, Dec. 2, in an exhibit entitled Kingsville Inksville. The art gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.To make the prints, artists carved oversize woodcuts that were then inked, covered in archival paper and padding. The steam roller simply rolls over the paper and block and when the paper is peeled away, the print is revealed.

International traveling exhibition of object-books
106 visual artists express their monumental ideas in miniature books.
42 venues, 15 U.S. states, 8 countries will appreciate this collection of artist’s books starting this summer 2011 through December 2013.

106 unique and subtly created object books will be featured in the second version of Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books, MIMB II Traveling Exhibition, 2011-2013. This Exhibition is coordinated by Hui-Chu Ying, professor of Art at Myers School of Art, The University of Akron, and its main exhibition space, the Emily Davis Gallery.

Diversity is what this exhibition is all about. Materials ranged from handmade and rice paper, plastic to tea bags, wood blocks, and mailing envelops, and the techniques from letterpress, silkscreen, digital prints to collage, die-cut, and painting. The artists also represent 7 different countries and cultures: United States, Canada, China, Japan, India, Pakistan, and Spain.

“I think the miniature book idea is really a great artform to serve as the basis for this economical traveling exhibition. Any artist can take on the challenge of scaling down thoughts, text, images, and materials to create a readable, workable small scale artist book that is a pleasure to handle, to read and to exhibit”, comments Hui-Chu Ying, associate professor of Printmaking at Myers School of Art, who came up with the idea of this traveling exhibition two years ago when she created the first version of MIMB.

Cristina Rom, Library Director from Cleveland Institute of Art and one of MIMB II jurors, expresses that “ the artists’ books genre started as an American and Western European art movement but is now international in scope, as artists from around the world are engaging with the book” and its multiple possibilities for artists and readers.
MIMB II has arranged 3 North American circuits and 1 international route, with the purpose of promoting the work of local artists to a wide range of audiences, venues, and cultures. New York, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Georgia, Colorado, among others states, will host this exhibition, starting simultaneously in July 2011 at Emily Davis Gallery, OH and Savannah College of Art and Design, GA. The international route begins this fall at the National Taiwan University of Art, followed by the Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.
Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books II is a collaborative and educational project that is possible thanks to the contributions of committed artists and the support of important institutions in the U.S. and internationally.

About the coordinators: Hui-Chu Ying & the Emily Davis Gallery
Hui-Chu Ying, Associate Professor, Myers School of Art, The University of Akron. She holds a MFA and MA from West Texas A & M State University. She also got a BA from San Jose State University, CA and a BS from Shih Chien College in Taiwan. Hui-Chu Ying’s work is a reflection of her concern with humanity’s suffering resulting from wars, disasters, disease and loss. She exploits all the possibilities of various media by combining painting, drawing, etching, screen-printing and collage, as well as others, in her work. She creates large-scale installations using drawings and prints on paper producing a space for meditation or communication.

The nationally known Emily Davis Gallery has a long history of presenting engaging exhibitions of emerging and established contemporary artists. It is the main visual, fine arts exhibition space of The University of Akron. The gallery is located in the center of Folk Hall which houses the Myers School of Art. The gallery is equipped to the level of museum quality lighting, HVAC, and security systems. Comprised of two, separate exhibition levels, the Emily Davis Gallery programs about 12 exhibitions every year. The exhibitions are curated by the director of the galleries, a faculty exhibitions committee, guest curators, and usually includes one all-faculty and one juried student exhibition per year.

Curator Statement

The main mission of MIMB is to encourage artists to create their own books to share with everyone. The exhibition is open to all artists who want to bring their monumental ideas and put them in miniature books… Many books have surprising and interest content confirming the old adage that one ought “not to judge a book by its cover”. A few books exude a beautiful sensibility throughout their pages. Some carry strong messages conveying issues dear to the artists. There are so many extraordinary ideas to be found in this collection. The varieties of materials the artists used are incredible. Few books are made from recycled materials and some in which the artists have reinvented their old works. What a perfect time to create artwork that is eco-friendly.

Smythe opens "Girlie Girl" exhibit at Ben Bailey Art Gallery

Local artist Michelle Smythe says her most recent body of work is probably the “girliest” work she has ever done. Thus the name of her exhibit on display at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. When Did I Become a Girlie Girl? is currently on display through Friday, Nov. 4. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, Oct. 27.

When Did I Become a Girlie Girl? features pieces from Smythe’s most recent exhibits Naturals ’08-’09, Goodbye Girls and Wallflowers.

Naturals ’08-’09 saw Smythe move away from painting and drawing into wall-dependent sculpture with dresses and corsets made with pulp mache’, glue and natural materials like grass, seeds and beans. The background is hand-painted acrylic paint on wood panel. Goodbye Girls is a series of paintings dedicated to young women who have gone missing and/or been murdered at a young age. Smythe said it was inspired by a friend whose daughter was murdered. Each work includes an empty ghost-like wedding dress representing the wedding dress they will never wear. “Wallflowers is the girliest body of work that I have ever made. I’m still asking myself where this is coming from,” she said. “Prom, debutante and wedding dresses mark special moments in our lives. Even if we barely remember the event itself, we have the photos – and sometimes the dress – to help us retain our memories.”

Smythe lives in Rockport and is a founding member and serves as executive director of K Space Contemporary, a non-profit, contemporary art space in Corpus Christi. She holds a bachelor’s of fine arts degree from University of Texas at Tyler, master’s degrees in arts and fine arts from Stephen F. Austin University.

She is active in coordinating the monthly Corpus Christi ArtWalk, Dia de los Muertos Festival and other events. Smythe also is an adjunct instructor of art at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Paul Valadez exhibit features "Fragments" of every day life

Paul Valadez, full-time lecturer in the art department at University of Texas-Pan American, will show his art work in an exhibit entitled Fragments at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The exhibit begins Friday, Sept. 16, and continues through Friday, Sept. 30. Valadez will be honored at a reception Wednesday, Sept. 28. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Valadez is a figurative artist who works in mixed media paintings and works on papers. Fragments is made up of over 450 paintings made out of acrylic and different materials including menudo spices, chili powder, instant coffee, bathroom cleanser and dirt. These are painted on found pieces of wood, particle board, paper and metal.

“The subject matter is a collection of text fragments that I have found while living in the Rio Grande Valley. Over the last five years, my research for this installation includes regional scavenging and documentation,” Valadez said. “When I would come across a text fragment whether it was a sign for a business - sometimes defunct - or a scrap of paper with what I considered interesting writing/words on it, I would document my ‘find’ and write it down in a notebook for future reference.

“A key element in the process of this collection is the emphasis that I continue to practice and that is the ‘aging process’ depicted on this and many of my other works of art. I believe it gives us a sense of familiarity and links me to my childhood,” Valadez said. “At one time my father aspired to be a sign painter, so art and graphic sources were and are still an element my Dad and I bond over.”
Valadez grew up in Stockton, California and moved to San Francisco to pursue an art career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary art from the San Francisco Art Institute and his master’s in studio art from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was awarded a Weiss Fellowship for Urban Livability.

“My artwork is somewhat regional in nature and has a lot to do with where I am living at the time,” Valadez said. “I previously lived and worked in the bay area in California where my work dealt with consumerism, and when I lived in the Research Triangle in North Carolina, my work was dealing primarily with my identity. Today, I am living in the Rio Grande Valley in Deep South Texas on the US/Mexico border -- a place I have called home for the past five years. My current work is autobiographical in nature with a somewhat satirical social commentary, quite a blend of what I am experiencing in my life. I find that it is a reflection of my childhood memories and growing up in a bi-cultural household in the Central Valley in California.”

A&M-Kingsville's Santa Barraza has work on display in McAllen exhibit

Art work created by Santa Barraza, art professor at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, will be featured at the library art gallery at South Texas College (STC) Pecan Campus in McAllen in an exhibit entitled Four Decades of Chicana Art and Culture in Tejas and Beyond. The exhibit begins Thursday, Sept. 15, and continues through Saturday, Dec. 10.
The exhibit will feature paintings, drawings and prints by Barraza, who is widely known as one of the country’s most significant Chicana and Tejana artists.

As part of the exhibit’s opening, Barraza will discuss her work at 11:30 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. Sept. 15, in the library’s Rainbow Room, located in Building F, 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. A reception will be held at 7 p.m. following the evening presentation.
Admission to all events is free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Barraza’s work embodies the heart of Chicana sociopolitical culture and references the universal existence and experience of life on Earth. She memorializes her mother, friends and family members and incorporates religious iconography and Mesoamerican mythology in her art work.

“We are thrilled and honored to showcase the work of an artist that is internationally renowned,” said Esther Garcia, STC library specialist. “Her work is very exciting and powerful. Her bold use of color and fine depiction of form build on the beauty and emotion that emanates from her work. I know its themes will resonate for our community.”

Barraza earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts from the University of Texas. She has taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and Penn State University.

With a purposeful brush, Chicana artist, Santa Barraza, rejected the European art aesthetic embraced by our nation’s art schools and found her own voice in the culture of pre-Hispanic Mexico. Her exhibit, “Four Decades of Chicana Art & Culture in Tejas and Beyond,” at STC’s Library Art Gallery, presents an overview of her personal artistic explorations.

Barraza’s paintings reflect a simplified representational style. She sees this as a break from the established European art tradition embraced by U.S. art schools. Her rejection of standard color theories was fed by the insistence on European aesthetics during graduate studies at the University of Texas. Influenced by a visit to Oaxaca, she became fascinated with Mesoamerican mythology. “I began reclaiming my identity, and de-colonizing myself,” she said.

Her use of the term, “de-colonizing” is significant. “Mexican Americans and Native Americans have been colonized by the Europeans,” she explained. “When the Spaniards came, they colonized us. We lost our language. I was Karankawa and we had an indigenous culture we no longer have. My color palette is the de-colonization of the traditional European color aesthetic.”

Her work depicts the historical, emotional, and spiritual land between Mexico and Texas as it relates to her own life.

Several of the paintings in the exhibit incorporate “date boxes,” a pre-Hispanic method of representing days of the week. Barraza has taken that format and made it personal. “Codex of the Trinity” shows a trio of contemporary women. Behind them is a cross; its décor is Aztec. The central figure springs from a maguey plant, the symbol of life. Date boxes fill the bottom and right sides of the work.

The paintings pulsate with direct color, and often incorporate symbolic icons from the Mayan and Aztec codices. As with other Chicana artists, it is helpful for the viewer to have knowledge of Mexican lore.

Her concept of de-colonization is successfully seen in the painting, “La Llorona ll.” This painting is informed by a Mexican legend about the tragedy of a beautiful woman who, out of jealous anger, threw her children into the river. She died from the grief of her misdeed.

Barraza’s painting tells the story in flat, superimposed layers. Her heart exposed, an emotionless La Llorona faces us from the center of the canvas. A maguey plant grows behind her. Behind that, the turbulent water, which contains various symbolic elements from the codices. A winged child hovers in an upper corner.

The Ben Bailey Art Exhibit that took place at six p.m. this Wednesday was met with great enthusiasm. The gallery was packed with people, and the professors showcasing their work were more than willing to talk about their art.
“The reception is going much better than I expected. We’re hoping that we can continue to do this for every fall semester, as an introduction to the faculty. It’s important the students know who their professors will be,” said Jesus de la Rosa, director of the exhibit.
It wasn’t only art majors that attended the reception. Others, like student Milton Vital, walked in to have a look, and they were pleased with what they saw.
“I may not be a very artistic person, but I like it a lot. The art triggers a response in my head,” said Vital.

One of the major reasons behind the exhibit was to celebrate the forty years that Dr. Robert Scherpereel had dedicated to teaching at TAMUK. The other was to commemorate the fusing of the Art, Communications, and Theater departments, or the ACT department.
“This is our opening show for the merging of the Art, Communications, and the Theater department. The more the merrier,” said Charles Wissinger, one of the art professors.
Wissinger explained that one of things he hopes to see in the future is more exposure to art. For the last few years, the art department has aimed at achieving a top notch art gallery.
“In Kingsville, there is no other place to view art. We’re not only teachers, we’re artists, and we’re also role models. We create the culture here. We want to involve the community with art; culture is extremely important, and it enriches our lives,” said Wissinger.

TAMUK Art Faculty Exhibit To Open This Week

Displaying the talent of the faculty in the university’s art program and honoring two longtime employees who retired this semester is the purpose of the Art, Communications and Theatre Departments first art exhibit of the season.

Title “Art 2011: Faculty Exhibition,” the exhibit will run through Sept. 9 in the Ben Bailey Art Gallery in the Art Building. On Sept. 7, there will be a reception honor retiring Art Professor Dr. Richard “Doc” Scherpereel and administrative assistant Delia Hale. Scherpereel had more than 40 years experience with the university’s art program and also served as department chair.
Organized by Professor Jesus de la Rosa, the primary purpose for this art exhibit was to honor the retirement of Scherpereel and allow for the art professors to display their creations. Since this is the first faculty exhibit in a long while, De le Rosa is also showcasing the artwork of two retired professors.

“I want people to see the work the faculty is dedicated to. Besides teaching, we all have a love for practicing the arts. The theme for this month’s exhibition is a celebration of the faculty as practicing artists,” De la Rosa explained.

The reception for the gallery will be on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. The gallery is open to students, faculty, and the community of Kingsville as a whole. Admission is free.
“It’s very important for the art students to be exposed to this. They don’t have the resources to see art museums. As for the community, it’s cultural. We know how important culture is,” De la Rosa said.
Each piece of art in the exhibit has a story, he said.

De la Rosa’s Smoking Mountain, for example, symbolizes the concerns he had growing up in the Texas and Mexico borderlands where cultures, languages, and identities conflict.
Charles Wissinger, one of the professors showcasing his artwork, said, “One of the main reasons I love this art exhibit is because it gives the students a chance to see our work. We’re their role models. The other reason is that there aren’t any opportunities to see art otherwise.”

Wissinger explained that he was lucky enough to travel frequently, so he incorporates different cultures into his artwork. One of his drawings, titled Migraine, expressed an emotion. Not only is art about portraying objects, he said, but it is also able to express feelings.
James Allen, an aspiring art major, said, “It’s pretty inspiring to see this work. They started out just like us. Some kids just don’t appreciate the knowledge that they’re passing down to us. The professors will do their best to help us succeed. And for the people not majoring in art, it’s still nice to stop and admire it.”

Bailey Art Gallery exhibit to feature installation art from noted contemporary artist

Contemporary artist Fernando Orellana will bring his creative, distinct contemporary art to the Ben Bailey Art Gallery, Monday Feb. 21-Thursday, Feb.24.
Orellana will create an installation art exhibit during his visit—a type of contemporary art where art components are installed in a gallery to be experienced by the viewer for the duration of the show. He will work with both art and engineering students during the installation process. An artists’ reception for Orellana will take place from 4 p.m.-6p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24. The exhibit will be on display through April 1. This event is free and open to the public.

Orellana currently serves as an assistant professor of digital art at Union College in Schenectady, NY. He uses new and traditional media as a way of transmitting concepts that range from generative art to social-political commentary. His work is infused with humor and frequently involves robotic forms, projected images and digital technology.

He has recently exhibited at the Cultural Center of Spain in El Salvador, Museu dʼArt Contemporani de Barcelona (Spain), Carrie Haddad Gallery (New York), Espacio Fundación Telefónica (Argentina), Exit Art (New York), LABoral, (Spain), The Tang Museum of Art, (New York), Glass Curtain Gallery (Chicago), The Ark (Ireland) and The Biennial of Electronic Art (Australia). Artist Statement

Dying and birthing for generations upon generation, always arriving at a question,

we hurtle through space and time, helplessly out of control. Approaching the future

at an ever-increasing pace and plugged into one another ingenuously, we perpetually

dismantle and assemble each other. Along the way encountering irregular moments

of nirvana, keeping us interested and entertained.

It is through this prism that my recent artwork is born. Taking on varying forms and

mediums, the visions that have surfaced of late lean towards conversations about

the nature of reality, our place on the mortal coil, the relationship and

communications we share with each another, and what may lie beyond the shackles

of the living. Like the prisoners of Socrates’ cave, what dreams may come as we

reawaken from the shadows into the blinding light?

The Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will kick-off the new year with an art exhibit by Kingsville artist and alumna Jayne Duryea running January 10 through February 4.

The exhibit, “Deep Connection to Nature,” will feature paintings—oil on canvas and watercolor on paper—along with three-dimensional works and colorful hot sculptured glass.

Duryea currently serves as the division chair of fine arts and kinesiology at Coastal Bend College, where she has taught for 30 years and is the director of the Simon Michael Gallery. She has been nominated for Texas Artist of the Year the previous two years.

Dureya operates art studios in both Beeville and Rockport. Her choice of medium includes blown and sculptured hot glass and paint, which are also courses that she teaches throughout the year. Her artwork has been displayed internationally with collections in the United States, France, Canada and Grand Cayman Islands.

Duryea will conduct a gallery talk on 1 p.m. Thursday, January 20, with an artist reception scheduled for 4 p.m. that day. Both events are free to the public.

Veteran Graffiti Writer Chaz Bojorquez Visits TAMUK

Veteran graffiti writer from Los Angeles, Chaz Bojorquez, will be installing a never-before-seen graffiti work in the Ben Bailey Art Gallery, Texas A & M University, Kingsville (TAMUK); a permanent figure in Chicano art history, Chaz has been writing graffiti since the 1950s, when he first experienced Los Angeles Cholo style graffiti, and today he is considered a king of calligraffiti. His artwork is found in major museums (Smithsonian Institute) and in private collections (Nicholas Cage and Cheech Marin). A published author, he is an expert in calligraphy art, of which graffiti is a prominent world expression. Trained in art schools, Chaz is also a well known graphic artist, having worked in numerous Hollywood movies, such as Born in East L.A., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Star Wars. Lately, Chaz has been decorating skate shoes, T-shirts, and hats.

Writers from Austin, Kingsville, and Corpus Christi will join Chaz, contributing their graffiti pieces in a unique live performance project that has never been attempted in the South Texas Art scene.

Other writers, many from K-Space, an alternative art gallery in Corpus Christi, will also perform their individual “styles” in the gallery space. Students from the University’s Art Department and International Student Services Department will contribute their writing as well.

Graffiti or graff art is a world wide expression historically found in ancient caves, Roman buildings, and modern subways. The Berlin Wall was heavily covered with personal and social messages in graffiti done by German artists and world visitors. A permanent fixture in street art, graff today reflects fresh popular culture, edgy music, hot fashion, and anime, as well as artistic concerns and political statements. This exhibition at TAMUK will present individual and group expressions representing numerous graffiti techniques and themes to demonstrate that graffiti is a contemporary American art.

Additionally, to better advance the aesthetic and educate gallery viewers regarding graffiti art, Chaz will offer three lectures in the Art Department describing his life and body of work. To promote vanguard art, Chaz presents his writing contextualized within a performance expression.

For artist David Freeman South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley are magnificant, sacred and bewitching all at once. They also serve as his artistic inspiration as reflected in his exhibit “Observation Deception”

Freeman, an art instructor at South Texas College, and editor of Voices of Art Magazine turns his observations of the world around him into art, often using materials from local pulgas (flea markets) and thrift stores as artistic resources.

“Observation Deception” includes photographic images and Freeman’s artistis interpretations of traditional Mexican wrestler masks—or mascaras, which remain a recognizable symbol in Mexican and Rio Grande Valley culture.

“David Freeman’s work displays separate aesthetics, rituals and culture from South Texas, The Rio Grande Valley and Northern Mexico. He gracefully blends Catholic icons, divine religious adoration, with street photography, installation and the act of collecting as art. This one-man group show has a beautiful domestic carnival feel to it. Ramon F. Barelas work involves installations and multimedia projections which are a reflection of his continuing investigation into the new scientific paradigms and the implications of collective transformations of consciousness in world culture with an emphasis on Mayan Cosmo vision. He feels that the stages and cycles of time are increasing toward a worldview of evolutionary consciousness. This information informs his aesthetic creating certain components in which the visual contrast with the information of the viewer. His hope that this juxtapositions will resonate with the developing psyche of the viewer.

Barela was born November 29, 1949 in Dexter, New Mexico. He moved to Texas in 1966 and graduated from Odessa High School, Odessa, Texas in 1968. He attended Odessa College and completed his BFA in fine arts at Texas Tech University, Lubbock Texas 1973 while studying under Steve Reynolds.

He has recently completed his MFA at UTPA, Edinburg, Texas. He has been an educator for Texas Public Schools for fourteen years and presently teaches at Harlingen High School, Harlingen, Texas.

It's ceramic showdown time again! The annual South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Beyond the Vessel exhibit is now on display at the STC Library Art Gallery and the UTPA Visitors Center in Edinburg. Two exhibits under one concept explore the sharing of ideas, ceramics-wise, from different Texas institutions. This 3rd annual exhibition, in collaboration with a conference, displays student and faculty ceramic works from eleven universities and community colleges across Texas.

The strongest feature of this exhibit is the exhibition of works by the conference's featured speakers: Aaron Calvert of Henderson State University, Charles Wissinger of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and Fulden Sara-Wissinger of Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Coastal Bend College. Exhibited in the upstairs gallery at the LAG, their work is technically interesting and aesthetically satisfying.

Chuck Wissinger showed different approaches with his work. There is the riff off traditional ceramics in his "Made in China" porcelain plate. In "The Many Worlds of Chuck" he went non-traditional with a sculptural expression that blurred the boundary between ceramics and sculpture. Led by ideas rather than materials, he depicts things that have personal significance, including a self-portrait.

"The thing I was interested in pursuing in this show was the autobiographical piece," explained Wissinger. "One of the things that really impacted me was going to Oaxaca a few years ago and seeing the playful way that they do these things about life. I particularly liked the Aguilar women figures, where, down the skirt, the whole saga of the family plays out. Before that, I had never done anything with biographical intent, but then I got interested."

Aaron Calvert's "Sandblasted Black Ant" vessel is a sophisticated work with a witty, beautifully designed insect motif. Fulden Sara-Wissinger's flat clay pieces are gemlike with varieties of rich color and texture flowing within restrained areas.

The remainder of the exhibit at the LAG is spread out across tops of bookcases. "Varvara (I love your dear eyes my friend)," porcelainious clay body and mixed media, by Sasha Nochovka, UTSA, creates an ambiguous balance between cruelty and protection. The preciousness of the animal - we see only the worried eyes and gilded nose and toenails protruding from a leather wine bag, creates a disconnect between tragic reality and a decorative table piece.

Faculty and graduate student ceramics are worth a look, but I felt that the remainder of student works reflected a lack of personal connection to the medium.

"I'd like to see us focusing on South Texas outward," Wissinger added. "If we can get the idea of South Texas out there, I think it can plug into some pretty important international things."

South Texas College, together with The University of Texas Pan-American, is proud to present “A South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Beyond the Vessel,” which is the third annual Rio Grande Valley ceramics conference and exhibition. The event includes art lectures and ceramics demonstrations, as well as a full display of ceramics works by artists and professors from across Texas. The conference starts Friday, June 12 at The University of Texas-Pan American Ceramics Lab, concluding on Saturday, June 13 at STC’s Pecan Campus Art Bldg. B Ceramics Lab. Art Lectures will also take place Saturday at STC’s Pecan Campus Bldg. B Auditorium. All activities are free and open to the public.

“This is the third conference STC and UTPA have put together and we look forward to being enlightened by an ever younger generation of ceramic artists, discovering their creative, inspired approaches of pushing the boundaries of innovation,” said David Freeman, curator and programs coordinator of STC’s Library Art Gallery Program. “The show explores the influences of our Southern continental United States and its individual, extensive point of view regarding contemporary issues in the devolvement, expression, concept, personal exploration and experimentation of different processes and unique aesthetics in contemporary ceramics today.”

“We are excited to roll out the South Texas Ceramic Showdown once again and witness its evolution over the last three years,” said Chris Leonard, UTPA ceramics lecturer and conference organizer. “The concept is the same with both student and faculty work exhibited together with a promise for great diversity. The event is also a fantastic opportunity for ceramic students, as it offers an opportunity for creative interaction, and communication with our three presenting artists. All three presenting artists are tremendously versatile, but I am anticipating an acceptance of the ceramic tradition: vessels that transcend and push beyond mere function into all sorts of narration and possibility.”

The conference includes lectures and ceramic demonstrations by Aaron Calvert of Henderson State University, Charles Wissinger of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and Fulden Sara-Wissinger of Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Coastal Bend College.

Half of the ceramic works will be exhibited at STC’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery with the balance being exhibited at UTPA’s Visitors Center. Exhibit opening receptions are on Friday, June 12th from 6 to 8 p.m. at UTPA’s Visitors Center and Saturday, June 13th from 6 to 8 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery. Do you feel manipulated by the media? Do you have nagging fears about the economy, or that cooking food in a microwave will kill you? The current exhibition at South Texas College Library Art Gallery brings all those fears out into the open. Designers were instructed to "sell their fear" for this juried, graphic arts, poster competition. The exhibition is a strong graphic and emotional experience for the viewer.
"This exhibit was created in order to celebrate the new Associate of Art Degree with a concentration in Graphics Design that will start in the fall of 2009, said David Freeman, Curator and Program Coordinator. "This was also an opportunity to let graphic designers express their own identity."
The exhibit demonstrates how advertisers, politicians, and other self interest groups, use fear to sell products and manipulate the public consciousness. If you are not aware of the way fear is organized in this country, then this exhibit will show you.
Surprisingly, there is little duplication. It seems that there are enough fears to go around. The posters remind us about cancer, job loss, New World Order, and even indifference. One poster illustrates the multiplicity of many daily fears confronting the hapless citizen, such as death, economy, and religion. The fear of not being beautiful is a reminder that an entire industry stays alive by persuading women that they are never beautiful enough, but buy that new cosmetic and you might be....
There's a new fear of plastic containers. Don't drink from recycles 3, 6, or 7, warns Candice Wardyn's Killer Plastics poster, they can kill you. Phyllis Evans questions the value of freedom in Someone Very Bad Wants to Hurt You. One designer includes all ethnic groups in his poster; their slang names suggest an alien strangeness, and seem threatening. The fear of being overweight is very profitable, too.
Frank Tierney fears indifference and what it could lead to with his poster, ...What if these were human remains?"
The posters are all digital prints, 24" x 36." Several lack the strong impact of the message in favor of stronger artistic considerations. For the viewer, this adds to the success of the exhibit. The show is not the quick view that one might expect from poster art.

Artist Statement

The content of my artwork generally revolves around functional man-made objects that some times conduct redundant activities. These activities are task humans need to have performed on a regular basis that may be mundane. I attempt to define my artwork through these images by using interactive objects in our public domain.

The use of mechanical objects, African masks, Adinkra symbols and other icons are about the polarity of being an African American in Western society. African art strives to be a functional component in the spiritual well being of people’s lives. Nevertheless, the Western ritual of interacting with parking meters, road signs, and other everyday objects is almost as religious.

I cannot partition myself from the urban icons that surround me. As a result, I see parking meters as Bafo and Fang masks and road signs as Kikuyu dance shields. Ideas of African Diaspora and these types of objects stimulate my creative process. Generally, a Western analytical approach gives my work its visual form. Conversely, it is the African intuitive process that physically gives the work life. As a result, much of my work relates Western thinking to African philosophy and Christianity to African Mythology.

4th Annual Human Rights Art Exhibition
2009 Juried Traveling Show

The theme for the artwork must deal with human rights issues. All artwork must be original. The concept may be applied to a broad range of topics. The exhibition shall be on display in conjunction with the Human Trafficking Conference sponsored by South Texas College’s Women’s Studies Committee. The “Across the Border” exhibition will be located at South Texas College and the Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico.

Selections: The exhibition is open to artists of all media, including but not limited to painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation art, drawings, photography and mixed media. Each artist can submit up to three (3) works. If selected, artists are responsible for delivery by March 6, 2009 and pickup of work by May 16, 2009. If shipped the return postage will be paid for by the exhibit sponsors. Hand delivered work not picked up by this date will become the property of South Texas College.Save those pieces that the artist needs to be present to display or present for a special or non-traditional installation, all work must be ready to hang and received in good condition. Any work not ready to hang will be returned to the artist and excluded from the exhibit.All submissions should include a self-addressed stamped envelope, properly-sized to fit any items that should be returned.

Submission Guidelines & Acceptable Image Formats

Digital Images
Submit a PC formatted CD containing JPEG images (please no slides) with the title of the work, medium & dimensions. This information can accompany the images on the screen or by hard copy. Label the CD with your name.

Video
Submit a DVD or VHS. Label with your name, title of the work and full running time.

*Submissions may include a brief description of the work in regards to concept or other physical attributes if not obvious in the image.

Sales: A 30% sales commission will be taken on all artwork sales. All profits after expenses will be donated to a nonprofit human rights organization.

Presentation: Two-dimensional work must be dry, complete, prepared in a professional manner and ready to hang. The necessary hanging hardware must be attached to the back of the work – either wire in eyelets or a serrated hanger on the frame. No glass please, only Plexiglas. 3-D work must be similarly complete.

*Exhibitors are encouraged to insure their work.
*An exhibit catalog will be printed after the exhibition and a copy will be sent to each accepted participant. There will be a Best of Show awarded to one entry and highlighted in the following year’s catalog.

Sangre Y Herencia Mixes Blood And Heritage Art Exhibit
Dual exhibit complements Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

KINGSVILLE (September 24, 2008) — Two South Texas women have joined their art work together for the Sangre y Herencia exhibit at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Grace Barraza-Vega, of Corpus Christi, is a painter, public school art teacher and graduate art student while Jessica Salazar McBride, of Harlingen, works in mixed media and is a self-employed commercial artist.

Their exhibit, which translates into Blood and Heritage, opens at the Bailey Art Gallery Wednesday, Oct. 1, and continues through Friday, Oct. 24. To open the exhibit, the public will be treated to a performance by De Xana Guana Azteca Dance Group from San Antonio. The group will perform at 6 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. Following the performance, at 7 p.m., an opening reception will be held in the art gallery.

George Vargas, assistant art professor and art historian, and Jesus de la Rosa, assistant professor, both from the A&M-Kingsville art department, curated the exhibit.

The exhibit was designed to complement the campus-wide Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration and Dia de la Raza, the celebration of the Hispanic heritage in Latin America. Dia de la Raza is celebrated Oct. 12 in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela. It honors the birth of the Hispanic culture dating back to 1492. In English-speaking countries, the day is celebrated as Columbus Day or Native American Day.

Everything's Going to be Okay illustrates how moments of vulnerability can turn into our greatest strengths.
